MI did the I_M_Possible…..and other news and facts!!!

WAOW!!! Sheer applauding is needed to appreciate the feet that Rohit Sharma and his paltan (team) has achieved in later phase of the league. No one could have even predicted more than imagined a place in playoff’s after their poor show of performance in UAE when they lost all their matches and returned to India at bottom of the table with five matches down and yet to open their account in winning points. Skipper of MI (Sharma) kept hoping and performing in front of more familiar crowds, with fans support and better contributions from batters now MI were challenging other teams and started competing like we have known them in past seasons of IPL.
MI’s first win came against the team who looked unbeatable and were also positioned at the top of the table were they defeated KXIP by 5 wickets in 22nd match of the league, then against RCB in 27th match by 19 runs.  But their streak was again disturbed by CSK. With that loss it meant MI had to win all their matches and hope some opposition’s results in their favour to seek a place in playoff.
In India, MI won six matches out of eight and it came to last match of the league to decide the final four teams to play for the title. It was Rajasthan Royal vs Mumbai Indians. With all the calculations and methods applied it was clear that:
  • If RR wins they are the one to qualify, simple as it can get
  • But, if MI has to qualify, they need to win with a margin to better off the run rate with RR.
  • If MI would have batted first they had to restrict RR and win the match by at least 45 runs and if MI opted to bowl (what they did) they had to case whatever the target set by RR in 14.3 overs.

For Raj Royals, it was the partnership of Samson and Nair that set a tone of scoring runs and gathered 100 runs before Nair (50) got out then followed by Samson (74). It was Faulkner and Hodge’s partnership that accounted for 49 runs but also challenged MI to get it in 14.3 overs.
It was a taunting task, but batsmen were positive and d only one option to case than to win and unable to qualify. Their task was cut-out. Simmons and Hussey started aggressively and soon Simmons perished and the man who is known for his fastest hundred on the new year day against West Indies were he scored 100* off 36. Corey was replacing M de Lange and he started his innings the way situation demanded from him. He struck 16 runs off 6 deliveries he faced and continued to pace his innings. On the other hand, MI kept losing wickets. Hussey (22) and Pollard (7) fell to cooper in the same over after Pollard been promoted in the batting order ahead of skipper. R Sharma showed some form but soon he too fell in catching up the required run rate and got out to Kulkarni. Raydu came to the party and scored 30 off 10 balls.
It came down to the wire were MI needed 10 runs off 3 balls when Raydu got run out on which was supposed to be last delivery to qualify but it was confirmed by the umpires that net run rate is tied and the next ball had to cross the rope for Mumbai Indians to qualify and vice versa for Rajasthan Royals. Batsman on strike was Tare who flicked the ball from Faulkner which was pitched full-toss on outside leg stump and it went to sail over the fine leg boundary. It meant MI qualified for playoff after not only levelling the score in 14.3 overs but also having a tie in NRR.
Logically, in the calculation of net run rate (NRR), the final score, and not the target, is the relevant number. For Mumbai Indians, the requirement to finish the chase in 87 deliveries was only subject to their final score being 190. The chasing team, if they take a few extra deliveries to get home, can still push their NRR up to the required fraction if they manage to achieve a final score that is sufficiently higher - by finishing things off with a boundary.

It was a match were unbelievable shots were played, strategies were made & executed and immense energy was shown from both side and a game was played within the spirit but many would say it wasn’t just a game of cricket, it was war between two sides and no soldiers were harmed from the outcome (physically rather than mentally). A man without him this case couldn’t have been possible and was truly rewarded as the Man-of-the-Match for his unbeaten 95 of 44 balls.
Has Mumbai Indians performed their best in the match that mattered or is there anymore special innings stored from the likes of Simmons, Pollard, R. Sharma and C. Anderson in the playoff?
We will see it on 28th when they take on much familiar competitors in the playoff’s CSK.

 Other News and Facts:
  • Uttapa is wearing orange cap and Narine is also owing purple cap both for KKR, but the past records states cap holders team is unlikely to win the league especially the orange cap holder.

  • On a personal note, three out of four team that were predicted way before IPL-7 was even started to enter into playoffs have made it to the stage. (you can check in my earlier post)
  • Now it’s just a matter of four matches, then whether we will see CSK for their third title or will it be KKR or MI to lift the trophy for second time or will the KXIP make this their season.

Following is the personal prediction of the playoffs:

Match 57: KKR vs KXIP-
KXIP will win in their home ground in front of home fans. KXIP have made it to playoffs by dominating their opponents with sheer power in batting but still their bowling line up is unpredictable and with KKR playing in home ground it would be difficult for Bailey & co. to out class KKR fans.

Match 58: MI vs CSK-
Once again these two teams meet in the playoffs were the story changes from the league. Here, MI has ruled over CSK but CSK would be looking for some payback. MI wins in front of home ground of Mumbai Indians.

Match 59: MI vs KKR- MI wins (for their winning momentum)

Match 60: KIXP vs MI-  KXIP wins their maiden title at Bangalore on Jun 1, 2014.

IPL-7 is here…complete Squad, Schedule, News and Reviews!!!

Whole new season of IPL with 7th edition which is advertised as the toughest season will get kick-start on April 16 at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium with a match between Mumbai Indians (defending champions) & Kolkata Knight Riders (most unpredictable team in the league).
The IPL 2014 schedule as mention below with the declaration of the tournament to be jointly hosted by UAE & India. This year Indian Premier League is about to commence from April 16 and would finalize on June 1. The IPL 7 comprises of 56 group matches and 4 playoffs including the final.

Quick Review at Auction:
All the teams, except Delhi Daredevils, retained some of their existing powerful players. Each of the franchises had 600 million INR as the starting salary-cap. Three of the squads retained 5 players each and could only buy back a single player with Right to match. On the other hand, as Delhi Daredevils retained none, it could buy back as many as 5 existent players including their new leader Kevin Pietersen- the costliest of foreign cricketers at the auction. All total 154 players were sold at the auction & Yuvraj Singh received maximum bid. Karan Sharma was the costliest player among the uncapped cricketers.
In regards to UAE, the IPL 7 match venues are Abu Dhabi (Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium), Dubai (Dubai International Cricket Stadium) and Sharjah (Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium). The Indian leg of matches would be played at – Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai); Feroz Shah Kotla (Delhi); Punjab Cricket Association Stadium ( Mohali); Eden Gardens ( Kolkata); JSCA International Cricket Stadium ( Ranchi); Sardar Patel Stadium ( Ahmedabad); M. Chennai Super Kings Team
MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma, Samuel Badree, Ben Hilfenhaus, Matt Henry, B Aparajith, Mithun Manhas, Ishwar Pandey, Pawan Negi, Vijay Shankar, Ronit More, John Hastings.

  • Review: Despite the recent controversy about the team and its management, Chennai Super Kings are once again the favourites to win the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. As always they seem to be “THE” team to beat. Semi’s place for sure.

Delhi Daredevils Team
M Vijay, Kevin Pietersen, Dinesh Karthik, JP Duminy, Manoj Tiwary, Quinton de Kock, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Sharma, Saurabh Tiwary, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Shahbaz Nadeem, Ross Taylor, Milind Kumar, Wayne Parnell, HS Sharath, Jayant Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, James Neesham, Kedar Jadhav, Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Shukla, Siddharth Kaul.

  • Review: They have done it all, change in squad, new management with support staff. But to plan and execute are two different kinds. Fans will hope better performance in this season under new leader Kevin Pieterson.

Kings XI Punjab Team
David Miller, Manan Vohra, Virender Sehwag, Mitchell Johnson, George Bailey, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shaun Marsh, Wriddhaman Saha, Thisara Perera, Glenn Maxwell, Rishi Dhawan, Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Akshar Patel, Beuran Hendricks, Karanveer Singh, Murali Kartik, Shivam Sharma, Shardul Thakur, L Balaji, Parvinder Awana, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Mandeep Singh.

  • Review: Similar to the story of DD, but think-tank has done a good job in auction to build a team that certainly looks tough to beat atleast on paper but can they have to perform on-field to justify the selections. Under Bailey’s captaincy players like Shewag, Vohra, Maxwell, Balaji and Johnson can surely make the the difference. Probable semi-finalist (hope so).

Kolkata Knight Riders Team
Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Narine, Jacques Kallis, Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Morne Morkel, Piyush Chawla, Manish Pandey, Veer Pratap Singh, Chris Lynn, Andre Russell, SS Mandal, Pat Cummins, Debabrata Das, Suryakumar Yadav, Manvinder Bisla, Ryan ten Doeschate, Kuldeep Yadav.

  • Review: KKR is one team that is unpredictable in performance; they can beat the strongest team one day and get beaten by other who is not so strong. In IPL-7 they will look to turn the tables around like they did in 2012.

Mumbai Indians Team
Rohit Sharma, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Michael Hussey, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Corey Anderson, Josh Hazlewood, CM Gautam, Aditya Tare, Apoorv Wankhade, Marchant de Lange, Krishmar Santokie, Ben Dunk, Pawan Suyal, Sushant Marathe, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Jalaj Saxena.

  • Review: They are the defending champions. MI is one of those teams who had retained five of their players in auction. With the Sachin’s retirement the morale might get lose but the management have managed to buy some experience in the form of Michael Hussey at the top of the order. Possible place in semis.

Rajasthan Royals Team
Shane Watson, Ajinkya Rahane, James Faulkner, Stuart Binny, Sanju Samson, Brad Hodge, Steven Smith, Abhishek Nayar, Ben Cutting, Kane Richardson, Tim Southee, Unmukt Chand, Ankush Bains, Vikramjeet Malik, Rahul Tewatia, Ankit Sharma, Amit Mishra, Deepak Hooda, Rajat Bhatia, Kevon Cooper, Iqbal Abdulla, Dhawal Kulkarni, Pravin Tambe, Karun Nair, Dishant Yagnik.

  • Review: They have also retained five players and it’s clear from their team squad that the management have tried to build the team on all-rounders and with the addition of Amit Mishra in the mix their bowling surely seems good. Fight for Semis place with RCB.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Team
Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Yuvraj Singh, Parthiv Patel, Albie Morkel, Mitchell Starc, Ashok Dinda, Ravi Rampaul, Muttiah Muralitharan, Nic Maddinson, Varun Aaron, Vijay, Sachin Rana, Yogesh Takawale, Abu Nechim Ahmed, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shadab Jakati, Sandeep Warrier, Harshal Patel, Tanmay Mishra.

  • Review: Kohli will be delighted to have players like Gayle, De Villers, Yuvraj and Murlitharan in the team who can beat the opponent single handedly on their day. But the problem arises when they play outside their home pitch were inexperience bowlers get expose and find it difficult to restrict or defend totals. Also its Yuvraj’s make or break season. It’s a tough competition for fourth and final spot against RR.

SunRisers Hyderabad Team
Shikhar Dhawan, Dale Steyn, David Warner, Darren Sammy, Amit Mishra, Aaron Finch, Irfan Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Brendan Taylor, Moises Henriques, Venugopala Rao, Jason Holder, S Aniruddha, Manprit Juneja, KL Rahul, Amit Paunikar, Naman Ojha, Ricky Bhui, Ashish Reddy, Chama Milind, Parveez Rasool, Prashanth Parameshwaran, Karn Sharma.

  • Review: It’s a team were all depends on the captain’s decision on the day. Right call from Dhawan and SRH will win otherwise it’s a downfall. They got all the ingredients opening batsmen, all-rounders, bowlers everything; it’s just that they need a good captain to handle in pressure situation.
